FAQ: Is the wireless a/b/g/n? (802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n)

All of our wireless hotspots support 802.11g and all but a few support 802.11a (these are highlighted on the wireless hotspot location list page). An increasing number of locations also support 802.11n.

Devices that only support 802.11b, and do not support 802.11g or 802.11n, will not be able to connect. This is because supporting the very small minority of 802.11b devices would have a detrimental effect on wireless performance for everyone else.

  • If you are looking to buy a wireless card for your computer, IT Services recommend that you get one that is both ’802.11a’ and ’802.11n’ capable where possible.

WiMax

WiMax (802.16e-2005 [mobile access]) is a microwave data transmission technology designed for longer range communication. The University does not currently use WiMax to provide wireless services and is unlikely to do so in the near future.
