FAQ: I get a message: “settings…do not match the requirements of the network”

There are two reasons for this message:

  1. Wireless networks use different types of encryption. With Windows Vista & Windows 7, you might see two eduroam networks listed:
    • Eduroam-WPA
    • Eduroam
One might have a red X next to it, and say “settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network” if you click it. These are just two different connection profiles for the same eduroam network – one for each encryption type. Your computer will use the profile that is most suitable for your current eduroam location automatically – do not try and force it to use the other one. The two profiles are necessary to ensure your computer can connect at all eduroam locations.

  2. The second reason for this message is that your settings are genuinely incorrect. If you are a Bristol user, refer to the setup instructions. If you are a visiting eduroam user, refer to this page or contact your home organisation for support.
