FAQ: Windows XP keeps trying to connect to the wrong wireless network

Sometimes Windows can lock on to the wrong wireless network and keep trying to use it. This problem mainly affects Windows XP. To set the University’s wireless hotspots as the preferred network:

  1. Open Start, Control Panel, Network Connections.
  2. Click the right-hand mouse button on the Wireless Network Connection icon and choose Properties. Click the Wireless Networks tab
  3. In the Preferred networks list find the network you want to use (e.g. ‘eduroam’) and keep clicking Move up to move it to the top of the list
  4. For any wireless networks you no longer use, click on them and click Remove
