Welcome to the wireless service
This is a quick introduction for students to the wireless service:
- The wireless service is free.
- You don’t have to do any special registration to use the wireless service – You just need your Bristol username and password.
- There are no specific maximum upload or download amount limits, but you must not cause problems for other users or with the network by using an unfair share. The wireless is generally pretty fast, but this may vary – we don’t guarantee any minimum or maximum speeds.
- Wireless is available at many specific locations all over campus, but not everywhere. You can’t use it at home.
- The first time you use wireless, pick the UoB-Wireless signal – This will let you get to this web site which contains the setup instructions. Once you have successfully completed the setup, your computer should automatically connect to the eduroam wireless signal when you are at a wireless location.
- When connected to eduroam, you can print and get to your Uni filestore (e.g. CUFS, “K drive”)
- Power! …you can plug in your laptop to recharge the battery at several of the wireless locations, but make sure your cables are safe and don’t cause a trip hazard. In some locations, a member of staff might have to do a quick visual check of your cables first.
- If you get stuck or have problems with wireless, we are happy to help you. Before you contact us, check out the wireless help pages and FAQs.
- There is a wireless blog: If there is anything big that is new, changing or broken with the wireless service, we will write about it on the blog.
- Like everything else, there are rules you have to obey. These are for the safety and security of all wireless users. If you break the rules we will email you. In some situations, we might disable your wireless access, but we will email you to explain why this has happened and what you need to do to get it working again.
