The machine room where one of the wireless servers lives has had an air conditioning failure (bank holiday syndrome!). Due to this, one of the wireless servers has had to be switched off, to stop it melting. Because we have another server in an other location too, no services have been affected.

** Everything should still be working! **

… so this post is for two reasons:

  1. Just in case the other server gets upset too, the wireless system will stop working.
  2. On the off chance that there is a scenario we haven’t considered (i.e. that the hot server being switched off, but the other one still on, has caused something to be broken!)

Updates on this issue will be posted as soon as more information is available.

UPDATED (2007-08-27, 17:09): One of those scenarios mentioned in point 2 above seems to have happened, resulting in no body being able to login to the wireless network at the moment – We are trying to fix it now!

UPDATED (2007-08-27, 17:13): Ok – the problem mentioned in the 17:09 update is now fixed – you should be able to login now 🙂

UPDATED (2007-08-27, 20:02): There appear to be some remaining problems since the ‘hot’ server was switched off, which means some users are getting a ‘limited or no connectivity’ message whilst trying to connect to the wireless system. We are working to fix this as soon as possible.

UPDATED (2007-08-27, 20:58): The problem regarding ‘limited or no connectivity’ messages, as noted at 20:02, should now be resolved. All wireless systems should now be fully functional.

UPDATED (2007-08-27, 22:00): All hotspots at both Stoke Bishop and Clifton halls of residence are currently offline. This is due to an anomaly in the way the hall’s networks work compared to other areas. This particular problem is unlikely to be fixed before Wednesday, when the University re-opens after the bank holiday. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

UPDATED (2007-08-28, 01:25): After a little midnight tweaking, both Stoke Bishop and Clifton halls hotspots are now up and running again.
